Willy is a salesman. He spends most of his life driving long distances in his car to find customers. Having worked like a dog for his whole life, he is still unable to make ends meet when he gets old, and so his hopes turn to his sons. His elder son, Biff, is over 30 but has never held down a decent job. His younger son, Happy, is also a hopeless good-for-nothing. Motivated by their mother, the two brothers finally make up their minds to do something big. They ask their father to meet them at a small bar one night, to discuss their business proposal. The day of this meeting arrives, but during the morning, Willy's company reviews the performance of each salesman, and fires Willy. At night, Willy arrives at the pub, only to find the two brothers drinking listlessly for Biff failed to borrow money from a school friend, so their business plan cannot be realised. Filled with disappointment and anger, Willy loses his mind. Biff and Happy slip away with their girlfriends. Seeing no hope for himself, his sons or his life, Willy commits suicide by crashing his car.
