The Jockey Club “From Page to Stage®” Programme 2017: “Franky”

A 21st-century re-imagining of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

A scientist creates a robot with consciousness with unexpected results…

21st century. Robotic engineer Victor Stone loses his only son in an accident. Driven by scientific ambition as well as grief, he creates the first ever conscious robot Franky and the world is not ready for it. A group of Luddites who are against artificial intelligence set out to destroy Franky among other robots and things go out of control…

200 years ago, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein showed the dangerous aspects of the modern scientific world. 200 years on, humans are forever pushing boundaries in scientific pursuit. Do scientific progresses always come with consequences? Will technology one day lead to our own demise?
