Exploring the art of being human

As a community partner of the HKU LKS Faculty of Medicine, AFTEC co-organises the credit-bearing Medical Humanities Programme, bringing the arts into the heart of medical education. Through theatre, movement, and music, this credit-bearing programme invites medical students to move beyond clinical thinking and explore the human side of medicine as part of the formal curriculum.

By engaging with the arts, students reflect on empathy, identity, and connection, fostering a deeper understanding of the body, mind, and patient experience. The creative process acts as a mirror, uncovering the often-unspoken dimensions of care, healing, and what it means to be human.

Before the workshop, I did not pay much attention to the synergy and harmony between the body and the mind… Somehow, my own body started to feel alien, as if it were a shell enclosing my mind. It was a weird yet eye-opening experience about myself, my identity, and reality.

The arts can heal… We are re-connected when we resonate with each other while experiencing the arts.

This workshop has offered completely new perspectives about the human body… especially its role in storytelling, where vivid descriptions of bodies reveal both an individual’s personality and also the setting and atmosphere of social interactions.
