Land.Tao: Fung Shui Woods
School Learning Model for Nature-based Solutions
Creative growth through nature
Land.Tao is a pioneering school-based initiative funded by the Lantau Conservation Fund. Launched in 2024, the programme reimagines education through the lens of creativity, ecology, and cross-curricular inquiry. By integrating the arts into academic subjects, Land.Tao fosters critical thinking, environmental awareness, and sustainable learning mindsets among students and teachers alike.
Rooted in the unique biodiversity of Lantau Island, Land.Tao has created a living ecological garden inspired by Fung Shui Woods on the campus of Buddhist Fat Ho Memorial College with teachers, scientists and creative practitioners. This space has become a learning laboratory—where exploration, engagement, and experience converge through a creative learning system. We continue to develop this immersive, holistic model, with the hope of replicating it in other schools in Lantau—and across Hong Kong.
Land.Tao is part of AFTEC’s Sea, Land, Sky trilogy, which also includes FLOW with AFTEC@Shalowan (2019) and Flight – Sights, Sounds & Shows @ Shalowan (2018). The land segment was curtained due to Covid.
Integrated learning
Land.Tao combines seven key subjects—Chinese Language, English Language, Visual Arts, Music, Computer and Information Technology, Integrated Science, and Life and Society—into one cohesive and creative learning experience. Over 80 hours, students discover how knowledge across disciplines connects through nature, art, and inquiry-based learning.
Project components

1. Creative Learning System
Land.Tao pioneers an interdisciplinary model that blends the arts with core academic subjects. Developed through teacher and creative practitioner collaboration, this curriculum nurtures creative thinking and self-directed learning.
- A cross-subject, inquiry-based curriculum inspired by Lantau’s Fung Shui Woods
- Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for teachers to foster a creative teaching mindset
- Systematisation of a sustainable creative pedagogy that benefits both students and educators
2. Ecological Garden
At the heart of Land.Tao is the on-campus ecological garden, modelled on the native vegetation structure and plant composition of Lantau’s Fung Shui Woods. This unique setting provides the foundation of a nature-based solution that strengthens the link between natural ecosystems and human well-being and serves as a hands-on, thematic landscape for biodiversity learning, conservation, and sustainability.

3. Showcases and documentary
a) Showcases
Students document and present their learning journeys to the public through two showcases that highlight student growth and foster connection to the broader community.
b) Documentary
Land.Tao‘s journey will be documented in a film that showcases its methods, stories, and impact. It also offers a sustainable, replicable model for other Lantau schools.
We’d love to tell you more.
