Relaxed Theatre
Making the arts accessible to all

The Relaxed Theatre project invited all audiences to experience performances in a supportive, judgment-free space for those on the autism spectrum and others with learning challenges. Rooted in inclusion, empathy, and accessibility, the project reimagined traditional theatre etiquette and environments to better serve neurodivergent and disabled audiences, as well as those who may find conventional theatre settings challenging.
Through creative adaptations and deep collaboration with specialists, artists, and community partners, Relaxed Theatre offered a vital model for how the performing arts can honour individuality. A special chill-out area was created for those who needed a very quiet space. Unlimited entry to the theatre was also a special feature.
We’d love to tell you more.
The usual theatre rules and norms are set aside. Audience members are free to make noise, move around, leave and re-enter the auditorium anytime.
Sound and lighting effects are reduced to less stimulating levels. Attendance is capped at half capacity of the auditorium to create more space. A chill-out area is offered outside the auditorium for audience members who need some down-time.
The play is specially adapted so that the storytelling is more direct. Interactive activities are specially designed according to the needs of the audience.
A pre-show info pack is sent to the audience, including the story, characters’ information and photos of the venue. This enables the audience to familiarise themselves with the upcoming theatre experience in advance.
Briefing is provided for venue staff, actors and administration teams on the needs of ASD young people.
