Outdoor Festivals – Shalowan Series

Where a historic village became a stage

AFTEC hosted two immersive outdoor arts festivals in the historic Qing dynasty village of Shalowan: Flight in 2018 and Flow in 2019. These festivals combined theatre, dance, music, installations, and science-inspired workshops, creating unique opportunities for artists, scientists, students, and the public to connect and celebrate creativity in nature.

Flow went on to win the 15th Hong Kong Arts Development Council Award for Arts Promotion and was later turned into a documentary. Together, the two festivals brought over 2,900 participants to Shalowan, engaging them in performances, guided tours, and hands-on learning. The village became a vibrant “Living Campus,” fostering cross-disciplinary discovery and inspiration.

Flow with AFTEC@Shalowan Documentary

The organisers really brought Shalowan to life, the layout of the event and the exhibitions were cleverly designed and well thought through. There were lots of diverse activities, the staff were enthusiastic and created a great atmosphere, even the indigenous villagers took part. Altogether, we enjoyed a happy family day out.

I was so grateful to have been a facilitator which allowed me to interact with the artists directly. It was great to chat with them about their views on the relationship between men and nature. Plus I had a chance to be a simultaneous interpreter and in the process discovered something new about myself.

FLOW – STREAM Learning for Schools

FLOW – STREAM Learning for Schools (STREAM) was a cross-disciplinary outdoor programme for Primary 1 to Secondary 3 students. In collaboration with professionals from the globally renowned Eden Project (United Kingdom), the programme explored topics related to water.

I felt a sense of discovery and admired other people’s talents; I also felt greater appreciation for arts and music.

The programme allowed students to learn beyond the classroom, to experience new things for themselves on a practical level as in real life. It gave them a sense of fun and new.
