AFTEC’s Inspiration workshops this year will show you the multi-faceted world of theatre productions. From voice training and costume design to actually running a stage production, these workshops are a great opportunity to get a taste of what it is like to be a theatre professional!

Voice Works: Story Telling (Family Workshop)

We all grow up listening to stories. In this workshop, you become the storytellers! We will learn to tell stories using simple acting techniques and public speaking exercises, using both our voices and bodies. We will learn how to communicate with confidence, explore our creativity and work together to create group performances. Guaranteed to be fun for the whole family!

Speed Dating: Behind-the-scenes Heroes

A rare opportunity to chat with theatre professionals up-close for theatre lovers as well as young people considering a career in theatre. We have gathered directors, designers and technical experts in this special speed dating night. Participants will be split into small groups, take turn to chat with each speaker and ask all you want to know about life and career in theatre. As part of the sharing and illustration, we will also be showing actual footages from an immersive theatre production where actors and audience interacted with scenes on videos.

2-4pm Family workshop
A fun family workshop where you will learn about different aspects in costume design through interactive activities, create your unique design with materials provided and try your hand at tie-dying.

4:30-6:30pm

A beginner’s crash course on theatre costume design. You will get to know a concise history on costume development, look at different elements in costume design such as materials, colours, shapes and styles, learn about mix and matching, and create your own design!

Acting

Get a taste of being an actor in this workshop where beginners are welcome! Participants will learn basic acting techniques, get hands-on experience in analysing script excerpts and rehearse scenes together. The day will culminate in a short performance on stage in the theatre, collaborating with participants of the Stage Production workshop who will apply what they learnt in their specialties.

Find out everything behind the scenes that make a show happen! After a general introduction, participants will choose from one of the following three specialties for in-depth learning, and the day will end with a simple stage production where participants from all specialties as well as the Acting workshop will join hands to create a short performance.

(1) Stage Management & Sound Design

The stage management team are a brainy team, great problem solvers, who ensure that every component of a production work seamlessly together. You may see some of them in black during scene changes but the scope of their work is a lot more than that. Find out all about stage management in this session, as well as the work of a sound designer, the audio system, and how music and sound effects add an essential dimension to a play.

(2) Lighting Design
Find out how theatre lighting gives life to a play and what lighting designers do from pre-production to production period. We will also look at the application of different types of lighting instruments and lighting effects including angles, colours and shapes.

(3) Set & Props Design

Find out how a stage designer transforms an empty stage into the world of a play. We will learn from different examples and work with our hands to lay out the set and props to create different scenes on stage with the help of scale models and basic 3D drawing.
