Braving the impossible:
AFTEC adapts explorer’s Amazon walk on stage

AFTEC proudly presents Classics for Juniors 2021: Walking the Amazon, based on Guinness world record holder Ed Stafford’s real life journey across the Amazon on foot. The very first time this story is brought to life on stage in Hong Kong, the theatre production will run in October 2021 at the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre Theatre. Performed mainly in English, tickets will be available at URBTIX from 27 August 2021.

Adapted from British Explorer Ed Stafford’s book of the same name, Walking the Amazon depicts the innumerable challenges from wildlife and people Ed meets on his perilous journey across Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. Finally, Ed meets Cho, a guide and friend, and they stumble against reason, suffering starvation and sickness until they reach the end of the Amazon. This is the story of a man who motivates himself to keep to his commitment despite physical and mental exhaustion for two and a half years.

Inspired by Kneehigh Theatre, a prestigious theatre from the UK which announced its closure in June this year, co-directors Dr Vicki Ooi and Suen Chi Hung forgo a naturalistic set to pursue an alternative approach. Through the magic of physical theatre, actors transform props and minimal set into foliage and landscapes to ignite the audience’s imagination and invite them to actively engage and partake in Ed’s journey. Post-show stage tours are available for ticket holders of $240 tickets.

Packed with humour and hardship, Walking the Amazon teaches resilience and perseverance in the face of challenges, a gem of a play perfect for students and adults alike.

Never Before in Hong Kong: Young Person’s Guide to the Theatre
AFTEC’s Comedy of Mistakes

Anybody interested in the arts and literature will enjoy Comedy of Mistakes. A (nearly) original play, it turns Benjamin Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra into a theatre guide, the very first such endeavor in Hong Kong. The story follows a classic by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, retelling the Sherlock Holmes mystery, The Speckled Band.

In the first part of the show, the actors that are the cast and crew are putting together a production of The Speckled Band. Multiple production mistakes get in the way of Holmes trying to solve the mystery in this play within a play production. Then in the second half of the show, the correct version of the production is shown.

In an hour you get a hilarious comedy and you leave the theatre learning about the various elements that go into producing a play.

What’s stopping you from laughing yourself silly and supporting live performances?

Plays for Young People: Symposium & workshop — playwrights from the new silk route and emerging translators from Hong Kong

As an essential aspect of the Belt and Road Initiative, The Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connection (AFTEC) has embarked on a ground-breaking project in building connectivity between Eastern and Western Culture through the Plays for Young People programme.

Plays for Young People is an event whereby emerging translators in Hong Kong have the luxurious opportunity of engaging first-hand with some of the best playwrights* from One Belt One Road countries – including China, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, and Turkey – for the very first time alongside Oscar Fung, a young local playwright and Vicki Ooi, AFTEC’s Artistic Director.

As a bilingual Life Learning TheatreTM with a special focus on youth development, AFTEC has created this event to draw together those with a shared passion for theatre and the understanding of the need for quality plays written specifically for young people.

AFTEC strongly believes in widening the vision of young people to beyond this city’s borders and to comprehend and recognise other cultures, their similarities and diversities. Through working closely with practitioners and playwrights from these countries, we hope to be able to take further steps in a sustainable journey in which the plays, in English and in translation, will be offered to schools, youth centres and tertiary institutions for staging and meaningful discussions.

Jonathan Meth, founder & curator of The Fence, an international network of playwrights, together with the above mentioned overseas artists, local veteran translators and the emerging translators, will lead a four-day symposium and workshop on March 1-4, 2018 at the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre.

The four-day symposium and workshop will deepen the participants’ understanding of the cultural, historical, geographical and social aspects of each country through discussion and sharing about the inspiration and influences for the playwrights, exploration on cultural issues, ideas and issues of each of the countries that the young people will encounter. Moreover, in-depth exchange will also focus on different elements of writing including the rhythm and tone affecting the translation process.

*Please see biography of the playwrights from the One Belt One Road countries listed at the bottom of this press release.

Since 2017, schools and youth centres have started working with these plays in English or Chinese through AFTEC’s Young Theatre Makers Scheme.

SCOLAR English Alliance “From Page to Stage®” Programme 2018 – Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde

Man is not truly one, but truly two

After the tremendous success of Franky, a theatrical re-telling of Frankenstein in 2016, the Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connection (AFTEC) will stage another re-imagined production,
Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, an exciting production inspired by The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, starting on March 1, 2018, with 28 shows at the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre Theatre.

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a successful classic published in 1886 by Robert Louis Stevenson, which portrays how every individual has a duality of both benevolent and malevolent personalities, thoughts and feelings within them.

Inspired by this enthralling classic, Dr Vicki Ooi will present a powerful production showing the destruction that can be wrought when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints and conscience. The play also presents a debate on how our personalities and moral compass were shaped. Does nature or nurture make us who we are?

The Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connection (AFTEC) collaborates with The Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) in delivering the “From Page to Stage®” programme 2018 to secondary school students for SCOLAR English Alliance.

The “From Page to Stage®” programme is a comprehensive learning and participation English theatre education platform. This highly-acclaimed programme has entered its 7th year with over 160 performances with astounding success. Tailor made for local secondary school students, the programme is a fresh and unique educational adventure which benefited more than 76,000 secondary school students and teachers. Through high quality drama performances and thoughtfully designed pre- and post-performance workshops, the programme nurtures students’ interest in classic literature and widens their exposure to authentic use of the English language.

An Inspiring Journey through history – Red Boat (Full Play) & The Secret Garden

26 young people of The Bravo! Hong Kong Youth Theatre Awards Scheme 2017-2018* will be staging two shows for the Young Company Double Bill at the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre Theatre on December 1-3, 2017.

Red Boat is an interpretation of a sensational story in an age of political turbulence. This topically relevant play is a timely catalyst for students to reflect on Hong Kong society today in the classrooms and beyond. Incorporating aspects of Physical Theatre, young actors trained in this dramatic genre will deploy their bodies as creative instruments. The Red Boat is an actual seafaring home of an opera troupe that stops in small towns to perform. The red boats, in history, are also often means of travel for revolutionaries in covert operations. In the play, two brothers forced apart then reunited struggle, argue and fight over personal and political issues, proving how current affairs affect the lives of even those who shun politics.

Created by AFTEC’s Artistic Director, Dr Vicki Ooi with Associate Director, Oscar Fung, Red Boat is set in the tumultuous times post-Boxer Rebellion and the 1911 Revolution where internal strife and foreign invasion ruled. The Chinese were losing their trust in the government, and the choice seemed to be the ongoing monarchy, constitutional reform or western democracy. Reformists and revolutionaries split families and friends.

The Secret Garden, written by Francis Hodgson Burnett is a well-known and touching story of a spoiled orphan’s self discovery and transformation through the fascinating  healing  powers of nature.  Mary Lennox, a sickly and foul tempered girl who is sent to live with her mysterious uncle, Archibald Craven, lives in a house full of secrets. An abandoned garden kept under lock and key is transformed into a thing of beauty, eventually creating a magical healing power that helps both Mary and another secret inhabitant of the house.

This play about young people and their search for identity and friendship is acted by young actors, giving an immediacy to the story as never before as they explore possibilities and limits in their own lives.
