Youth Theatre in Chinese Volpona: A Comedy
Inspired by Ben Jonson’s Volpone, Volpona, is a feminist play written and directed by Dr Vicki Ooi. It explores the themes of greed, jealousy and other moral values in a farcical manner.
Volpone, written 400 years old, is recognised as one of Jonson’s major works. Its story of compulsive acquisitiveness and abuse of privilege still resonates strongly with us today.
Volpona, an ultra successful career woman in the 21st century, has worked her way up to the top in the world of media and finance. She has learnt to get rid of scruples as well as people who stand in her way of acquiring power and money. Volpona begins to find making easy money boring because her victims are either too stupid or trustworthy. She decides she will plot one final scam to enjoy watching her victims lose everything because of their greed.
Will Volpona succeed in her final scam?
What does greed bring us?
Performed in Cantonese with English surtitles, this stage production gave the audience a whole new different theatre experience. The stunningly designed costumes and set combined to make the production an eye candy.
