Bravo Rising International Summer Institute 2016: Count Me In – Identity & Change

The Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connection (AFTEC) is happy to be back with a second Bravo Rising International Summer Institute this year. This summer we will be exploring themes familiar to young people going through the teenage years of development: identity, family, relationships, conflict and change, appearance and reality. We are bringing three expert artist educators from the UK to guide you along this journey in one of the following theatre workshops of your choice. The two-week workshop will culminate in a final showcase performance.

Classical Theatre

Participants will follow an active approach designed to bring classical text to life and engage fully with the characters and language. The course will provide the group with the means of analysing characters, identifying the tactics characters use and what motivates them and the relationship between characters and language.

Margo Gunn

Learning Consultant,

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, London

Devising Theatre

The group will devise their own theatre piece after exploring the themes and characters of selected texts using improvisation and theatre games as an active approach. These characters of classical theatre will be brought to life in a modern context, making them accessible to the young performers. Through this devising theatre, the participants will examine their own responses to the themes that are as relevant today as they were when they were woven into the plays written for previous generations.

Sarah Huntley

Head of LAMDA Drama,

Dulwich College, London

Physical Theatre

The group will be working with a practitioner specialising in physical theatre and will explore how to use this theatre form as a means of communicating the themes of their chosen texts. They will create their own performance using mime, movement and dance.
